SONGSALIVE!® WORKSHOP Structure
PREP to PARTICIPATE AS A SONGWRITER
Song Session time is usually 3 hours. The First half is dedicated to Song Critique Session where Presenters (You) can present a song* for critique/feedback from your peers.
At the break, we encourage you to mingle and introduce yourself to someone new. This is the time to network. Hey, you might even find a co-writer or collaborator!
After the Break, the Second half is dedicated to hearing from the Music Industry Guest Speaker/Master Teacher who will share a Talk on a pre-defined Topic.
- *Only Songsalive! Members can present a song (lyrics-only and instrumentals OK).
- Register/RSVP in advance to be eligible to participate. Only attendees get the zoom link and location to submit your songs.
- The event details backstage (see RSVP link above) will share details on how to submit your songs, where to submit them and any other rules.
- First timers (whether member or non-member) can audit but likely may not present a song, depending on time. You can absolutely participate in asking questions and giving song critique.
- Everyone - Cell phones turned off or to vibrate.
- We are on a zoom online meeting, so practice your zoom etiquette. Mute when not speaking, and keep camera on when participating (turn off if you're moving around).

Tips on receiving good critique
As the songwriter presenter, we ask you come fully prepared as follows:
- Provide lyrics and easy-to-find link to your song and lyrics in advance (attendees are asked to submit their songs before the workshop in a private document, see above). Please be sure your name, contacts and copyright date are on your lyric sheet.
- Have live instrument or digital audio cued with Host in advance.
- Works in progress, lyrics, instrumentals and released/finished compositions are all eligible for workshop critique, but we are not here to write a song for you! This is a critique session not a co-writing session.
- Take the “hot seat”, then before you present your song, introduce it and share what kind of feedback you are looking for (we focus on the song not so much the production). Please also state if this is a song for you as an artist or if you are pitching it. Feedback is usually different depending on this.
- After your presentation no comment from you would be generally required unless invited to do so. Be prepared if only the verse and chorus are played when time is restricted. Stay in the “hot seat” till your segment is complete.
Tips on giving good critique
- Guest Speakers have first choice to provide first critique. We ask that even the speakers keep critiques succinct in order to move through all presenters.
- Your feedback is also encouraged. Due to time, we usually ask for 3-4 comments from the room. You may either:
- Write your comments on their lyric sheets and return to songwriter; or
- Raise your hand to share your critique in front of everyone.
- Save your comment to the half-time break to speak one-on-one with the songwriter in private.
- At all times keep your comments succinct, to the point, non-repetitive (if it adds new value), POSITIVE and PROFESSIONAL in manner. Of course, a negative point can be raised so that we can all learn from our presentations, but POSITIVE CRITICISM is appropriate here. No song bashing!
- Always give your feedback from your own point of view. Avoid using words like “you should”, “you must”, “you need.” Try “I think”, “I believe” , “My personal point of view” etc. We are all professionals here and your feedback is only your view, not necessarily the only answer.
- Critiques are oriented towards the songwriting (melody, music, rhythm etc) and not production unless feedback is requested by the songwriter presenter.
