ROBERT STURGESS
Songsalive! Perth, Australia Chapter Coordinator
Robert Sturgess started writing songs at 20, in the naive belief that this would be a
great way to make a living… after all anyone can write a song can't they? After starting a band and
performing solo in Brisbane between; 1999-2001, Robert
realised that this was going to be much harder than he’d realised and so
instead of giving up, decided the best course of action was to learn from
people who had actually experienced success. Robert studied under Harriet
Schock, writer of 'Ain't no way to treat a lady', a big hit in the 70s for
Helen Reddy, and Dec Cluskey; of 60s boy band 'The Bachelors', followed by 3
years of music theory and arranging with
arranger Joe Paparone. Most recently Robert has been studying lyrics, harmony
and melody in songwriting at Berklee online, only now reaching a point where he
has learned enough about writing great songs consistently and is now writing
with a view to perform again in 2010.
Robert runs Songsalive!’s Perth
chapter - his ambition is to pass on to others what he has learnt and
believes that higher songwriting standards can only emerge when there's a
strong community learning, growing and supporting songwriting as an art form.
