The Power of Simplicity in Songwriting

	By Kim Copeland

	Feb 2012

Most up and coming songwriters have been told at least once to “be original”. Try to say something that hasn’t been said before or to say it in a new way. Easier said than done, right?

	…Maybe so.

Too often we strangle our creativity by trying to be too profound, too clever, too original. Listen to the radio. Most radio hits contain elements of familiarity combined with a new twist. They aren’t reinventing the wheel. They just give us enough new to make the old sound fresh.

Listeners want to feel engaged and comfortable while listening to songs. They don’t want to think as much as feel. Music is more emotional than intellectual. Complex lyrics and musical structures have their place, but in commercial songwriting, they are rarely the songs that “break” songwriting careers. Those songs are written for the writer, not the audience. If you hope to find commercial success as a songwriter, you owe it to yourself to try to understand what listeners respond to. Why they are drawn to some songs over others. What makes them willing to pay for some songs so they can listen to them over and over again?

Simplicity is a powerful tool in songwriting. If you can wrap a deep message within a catchy, repetitive melody, you’ve got a hit. If you can create a groove that makes the listener immediately feel comfortable wanting to move to it, you’ve got a hit. By combining simple elements that any listener can get involved with easily and quickly, and original elements (whatever you do differently than anyone else), you create a fresh, new product that can attract a mass audience.

When you play to your strengths by doing what comes naturally to you, you make writing songs easier and you write better songs. Keep it simple by identifying elements that work for you and combining them in a way that works for audiences.

Study what people respond to about your songs. Once you have identified it, let that be the unique factor that you showcase in all of your writing. It could be your language; the way you express yourself or your ideas. It might be your musical gift; the chord voicings you use or the particular texture and tone of your instrument, be it guitar or voice. Perhaps you feel grooves and phrasing that is different and hooks people into your songs.

Study hit songs from several genres, and try to determine what about the song is infectious to listeners. Is it the groove, the hooky message, the musical riff, the sing along melody? Next, choose one element from each of two or three different hit songs, and combine them with one of your lyrical ideas. Maybe a repetitive chord structure from one song combined with the groove of another. Now add your original lyric to it and see if it gives you a presentation for your song that now contains some proven elements with some fresh new ones. Almost every hit song has something that is familiar hidden within it, either by design or accident.

I am certainly NOT encouraging you to plagiarize anyone’s work; but studying it, learning from it and using that knowledge to help you break through the wall of commercial songwriting is encouraged. We are all conglomerates of what we have seen, heard, felt, and absorbed. By using your experiences, talents and personal musical tastes you will create an original voice for yourself as a songwriter. Hopefully, one that will help you stand out as original while attracting a mass audience.

When you hear “be original” and “this is a little TOO different – I don’t know what to do with it” in the same conversation, perhaps you are trying too hard. Try being original within the structure of familiarity and see if not only makes your songwriting life easier, but also elevates your standing in the commercial market.

CD REVIEW: 12 Track Mind, the new album by Songsalive! Pro Member Norm Strauss, is a rootsy, organic and mesmerizing body of work. This Canadian artist is someone to be watching, and I’ll tell you why…

The featured song that was brought to our attention first, “Play God”, is a masterful musical production that captivated me within the first 20 seconds with its music and magical voice. The guitar playing, the male vocal, the lyrics, the mysterious flute, all entranced me. I was mesmerized. Strauss is one talented artist! This song is so well produced and the story entrancing. But most of all, I fell in love with his voice. “Looks like the devil trying to play god”… the main hook line, tells of an eerie tale lyrically and through the music, using touches of middle-eastern nuances and implying trouble in the middle east, all that we know too well. I think he told the story eloquently, and gives us more emotion than hard core facts, letting our imagine run with our own interpretation of the issues. Well done.

The first track “Easily Satisfied” out does any Lady Antebellum song, with a touching duet which includes a female vocal (Kim McMechan?). It has a twinge of country, but with universal appeal.

But Norm doesn’t fit in one box. Straight after, “In Stereo” hops into your ears with this Paul Simon circus instrumentation mixed with a Tim McGraw vocal that makes me fall in love with his voice all over again.

What’s fitting to say is that Norm, while a master at beautiful recording quality, has a lot to say. He talks of love, losing friends, and personal strength. It’s touching and unusually sensitive, where so many male dominated records don’t capture the delicate and sensitive subjects that Dave does well.

This is more than just an independent record. This is a record that deserves mainstream attention, by an artist that has a fall-in-love with voice, and masterful musicianship and songwriting. I look forward to watching Norm Strauss’ musical evolution.

	INTERVIEW:

Question 1: Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city (please write the city here: ?:

I am originally from northern British Columbia. I grew up in mostly remote towns like Williams Lake and Vanderhoof. When I was 19 I took a job as a lumberjack working in the logging camps of central and northern BC. That's where I learned to play guitar and write songs. I had nothing to do in the evenings and we were 100 miles from the nearest town so I bought a guitar and started learning James Taylor and Paul Simon songs. Eventually I decided that this was no place for a musician to ply his trade so I headed south. I got as far Kelowna, British Columbia and have been here more or less for almost 30 years now. I don't think I even know how to run a chainsaw anymore. I have also lived for awhile in Boston, Vancouver and near Frankfurt in Germany.

Question 2. What style of music would you say you do?:

That's always a hard question to answer but i would say that these days the closest I can come to describing what I do is Americana. It's a close cousin to country music but usually with more attitude and it comes without the 'Nashville' parameters of songwriting. My CD's that I recorded throughout the 90's was more rock and roll.

Question 3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?:
When the song is coming easily its fun, but more often its a bit more of a grind than that. I still enjoy it though. It's thrilling when you know you have a good one on the line. Performing for me though will always feed the songwriting. If I ever were to stop performing I am sure my writing would stop pretty quickly. So I guess I am saying I enjoy performing more. My preference is small, intimate concerts like house concerts and small 'listening rooms'. I thoroughly enjoy telling stories and making a strong connection to an audience. You start the evening off as strangers but soon you feel like old friends as the evening progresses. I love that feeling. I never will get tired of it. I also love that I can push myself to a new boundary of playing and singing while performing. After a 20 date tour I am usually a better singer and player then when I started.. if only just a little bit.

Question 4. Who are your musical influences?:
Okay, another hard question to answer but here goes; James Taylor, Paul Simon, Mark Heard, Bruce Cockburn, Stevie Ray Vaughn (sometimes), Blue Rodeo, Queen (I know that's a weird name on this list) Beach Boys, Steve Miller and maybe just a touch of the Beatles.

Question 5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you:

I wrote a song with Andrew Smith called 'Kerry Anne'. It was written soon after I had two friends of mine in two different cities get ill and die around the same time. I remember going to visit each of them shortly before they passed away and I felt incredibly awkward and scared while they both were so brave and eloquent. I was shaken by my inability to process it all at the time. I started writing Kerry Anne as a way to try and figure out how I felt about this huge loss and to try to come to grips with it all. I wanted a way to remind myself of both of them long after. Singing that song does just that.

Question 6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?:

They are perhaps a bit vague but real nonetheless. I want to get better at what I do. I want to record at least two more albums during that time. (I currently have 14). I want to stay healthy and strong.

Question 7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next for you:

I started recording songs soon after when I moved down to Kelowna to explore the 'big city'. I was amazed when people would actually sit through the songs. Eventually I recorded my first project (for the tidy sum of $150.00 on Malcolm Petch's home stereo system). Malcolm had figured out how to bounce tracks between two cassettes and thereby create multi-tracking. I sold 500 copies that summer and was introduced into the world of making music to pay rent. I have been doing more or less the same thing since then.

I have been doing this a long time and have seen a lot of changes in the studio. These days I record mostly digital and then run it through an analog to get the warmth. My earlier recordings were also really band based. These days the arrangements are more centered around the acoustic guitar and to me are more holistic sounding. It sounds weird but here I am, still trying to find my 'sound'. The latest CD sounds to me the most honest and organically grown CD I have ever done.

	What's next?

I am starting to do a lot of touring in Europe and I am trying to build a bigger network there and I am also involved in an artistic project called Tribehouse. www.tribehouse.org. This is an artist collective based here and also in Dresden Germany that is trying to encourage and promote conversations about faith, justice and art. That is, how do you as an artist intersect your faith (whatever it is)with your art and does that ever intersect with helping those less fortunate? Check out the site when you get a chance.

Question 8. Where can we buy your music?:
At my concerts or on my website www.normstrauss.com or you can find me on itunes.

Question 9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?:

Less competition, more collaboration. Less corporation, more indie. The 'small time' musician is rapidly becoming more powerful and the labels are struggling to adapt. Better music is being made because the Internet has afforded more artists to bypass the traditional gatekeepers and get their music into the hearts of an audience that wants to hear it. People are finally getting tired of the plastic and want to hear the real thing again. The singer/songwriter is making a comeback.

Question 10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!:
I am brand new to Songsalive but I am looking forward to getting to know some of the other songwriters. One thing I love is hanging out with other writers. I think it’s a cool idea to have a place that facilitates this online.

Orange County Workshop

For the first time in a while, Songsalive Orange County welcomed a guest speaker to our monthly Songwriting Workshop. The producer Joe Solo, who had originally discovered Macy Gray and has since worked with artists as diverse as the Black Eyed Peas, Cradle of Filth, and Michael Jackson came to speak. The audience was thrilled! Joe brought along a collection of songs he has worked on as a "producer for hire", and showed us "before and after" examples of what he actually did working on peoples' demo songs to spice them up to professional levels. But before all that, he took a listen to OUR demo songs and imparted his wisdom. Doug Hansen and Craig Smetana brought out the latest version of their patriotic anthem. Taking sort of the opposite tack, Rod O'Riley presented an acoustic punk song making fun of ambitious politicians. Peggy Glenn showed us the latest version of her song in celebration of grandpas everywhere, which she has been "workshopping" for a while now. Rick Willingham brought back a song that we had previously told him needed to be faster, harder, and in a country style -- and this time it was faster, harder, and in a country style! Dina Seymour was a first-time presenter, whose song was put together by a song-for-hire unit in Nashville. And our friend Kip Korley with a fun and friendly song. It was a terrific workshop all around.
Orange County Celebrates Three Years of Showcases with Travis King and Michael Vanags

Songsalive Orange County celebrated 3 years of monthly singer-songwriter showcases by welcoming back two great performers, Travis King and Michael Vanags. They showed their talents to a small but eager crowd that ate it all up -- along with lots of cookies and coffee of course! Travis played a beautiful Marten guitar and offered a good selection of songs from his long and varied career, gigging all over Orange Country quite regularly. Michael followed up playing a gorgeous Tayler guitar. He said that every song he writes has a story -- and he told them to us between songs, making us laugh and often touching our hearts.
San Francisco Showcase

Songalive! is running a San Francisco showcase series every first Thursday of the month, currently held at Velo Rouge Cafe in San Francisco, CA hosted by local artist Katie Garibaldi, which features Songsalive! members performing outstanding original acoustic music. The most recent showcase took place on February 2nd, and featured two San Francisco Bay Area-based artists Deborah Crooks and Don Shearer. Deborah played the first featured set, sporting a new guitar which she picked up that day, made by a local guitar maker/friend. She kept the audience mesmerized with her warm and worldly stories/songs. Don Shearer, new member to Songsalive!, followed with a set of his high-energy quirky songs. Everyone in the cafe enjoyed Velo Rouge's food and drinks, along with the music, and the showcase was a success.
Orange County Workshop

Songsalive Orange County finished off a busy first month of 2012 with a fine workshop that featured four songs. Peggy Glen began with a song she's been working on through several workshops (Songsalive and otherwise) about a favorite grandpa and the memories he left. Rick Willingham followed with a perky folk-rock song about perseverance. Rick's friend Kip Corley gave us a song about a man's unswerving pride. And finally lyricist Craig Smetana submitted a blues song (on blue paper no less!) about leaving behind a loser town and its loser inhabitants. As usual the discussion was animated for each song, with several offers for collaboration going around the room. After the song critiques, the discussion moved on to "Songwriter Resolutions for 2012", sort of a musicians' confessional. Interestingly, several of the people present had similar resolutions they had made for the year, including: To write more. To FINISH more songs and get them ready, as in put down on demo CD's and mp3's. To get bands out and gigging this year. To go to more of OTHER people's gigs. And to learn to play instruments well enough to really know what sounds good in a song. That's a sampling of what you're likely to hear from Songsalive Orange County this year.
Kicks Off 2012 with an Outstanding Showcase

On January 26th, the Chicago chapter of Songsalive! held their bi-monthly showcase at the Heartland Cafe. We had two Songsalive! members perform. Susan Picking played an amazing set of original music on the ukulele and piano. The crowd fell in love with her beautiful voice and great storytelling. Simeon Peebler rocked the house with his set of folk-rock tunes. People were captivated by his wonderful voice and unique songwriting style. The audience had a fantastic time and loved each performance!
Showcase Heats Up the Stage at NAMM

Once again Songsalive returned to the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) annual winter trade show in Anaheim, California, with another representative group of performers to impress the crowds there to check out all the latest musical gear. Songsalive took the stage at the Hilton Anaheim (one of the main hotels next to the Anaheim Convention Center) on Friday morning of the show. The event was hosted by Rod O'Riley, Songsalive's Orange County representative. Things kicked off with the Conlons, Anette and Doug, and their excellent vocal harmonies and quirky, darkly-humorous lyrics. Up next was Katie Garibaldi, visiting all the way from San Francisco. She really impressed with her beautiful voice and striking stage presence. Local favorite Kay Reznick came next, joined on her well-known songs about "life in the southland" by Susie Husner. Then it was Susie's turn to have a go on her own, and the crowd loved it. Finally Annie Calder (visiting from Brooklyn!) charmed with her pretty songs and pretty harmonies with a friend. Having a little extra time, the Conlons returned to the stage for one more song to leave the crowd humming. Then we all headed off into the show to see what's hot!

Orange County Features Kern Richards & Amanda Abizaid at First Showcase of 2012

Things got up and rolling again in the County of Orange as we started the year off with our very first Monthly Songwriter Showcase of 2012. The NAMM show is coming to town later this week, so lots of people were in a musical mood. Kern Richards began the night, one year later, bringing back his bear-growl of a voice and his harmonizing bass player as they both showed off songs from his latest CD, released just recently. After that came our Showcase's first appearance by Amanda Abizaid, whom we had seen do such a fine job at the Songsalive Holiday Party last year. There it was her and a piano player, while here she accompanied herself on acoustic guitar. Wonderfully, we might add. Both performers left the crowd wanting more -- so they happily signed up on mailing lists and took home CD's!
