Single Review "I Was In"

Singer/songwriter, Juice's latest single, "I Was In," is not your typical folk/rock tune. The song begins with a catchy acoustic guitar hook and melody that have enough pop influence to stay in your mind long after the song has finished playing. Juice also has a voice that is instantly endearing, and her lyric are thoughtful and well-written. The bridge/breakdown takes you by surprise and holds your attention. It veers off in a completely different direction by introducing an edgy, electronic element that at first seems out of place, but then resolves itself, making perfect sense. Excellent and intriguing songwriting! Listen at www.reverbnation.com/juicebandrocks

1: Where are you from, originally and what brought you to San Francisco?

Born and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago. I traveled to LA at 13 to explore the world of acting. While I was there I fell in love with the artistic community. A few years later at the age of 17 I returned to check out the music scene. I was hooked. I finally moved there at 19 and my world is still being rocked! :)

2. What style of music would you say you do?

I'm a folk/rock artist. I write folky lyrics that provide a story with a powerful message. However, I've never been afraid to rock out and be a little edgy. I also let out a scream every now and again.

	Â

	3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I love them both. Writing gives me that release. That extra good feeling of being able to put all of my thoughts and feelings into words and onto paper. Being able to write things in a way so that people understand who you truly are is a magnificent gift. Performing is fun. It's acting. It's everything I love all bundled up into one. When I see a crowd of people dancing along, or swaying with me, or understanding what I'm feeling, It makes it all worth it.

	4. Who are your musical influences?

There are so so many, but here are a few that changed my life: The Beatles, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Bright Eyes, The Decemberists, Regina Spektor, Modest Mouse.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you:

I'm not sure if I necessarily have a favorite, but there is one that I hold very close to me. It's called "Regret This." I wrote this song about a time where I was struggling with an eating disorder. I was doing a lot of things that I would later regret in my life. Often after playing this live, people thank me, because almost everyone has been there. In one way or another everybody wishes they could turn back the clock.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

As a solo acoustic artist I'm ready for a band! I'd like to find a great group of musicians who compliment my sound and understand me. I'd like to get in the studio and make a killer CD! And of course, get on a groovy tour with other great folk/rock bands.

I'm finishing up my solo acoustic demo.

I think with the internet artists are able to get their music heard globally over night! That's a beautiful thing. However, I really do wish that it would return to the "old days" when an A&R person would actually go to a club to hear a specific artist.

As an artist, I appreciate such a great organization and the support and promotion they provide! I've played several songsalive showcases and have met some really talented and cool musicians! I love being part of such a supportive community. Thanks! :)

Single Review "Don't Torture Yourself (Enough)"

Danielle Carter's latest single, "Don't Torture Yourself (Enough)" is described as ambient soul, and the moniker fits. The keyboard part is well-written and performed. The bass line, although sparse, is mixed into the music well and fits the overall sound. There is also a percussive sound used periodically that adds an interesting texture to the song. Danielle has a great voice for this genre. Her airy vocals are arranged in lush harmonies that add dimension to the sound, although the vocals do seem to be a bit hot in the mix. That being said, "Don't Torture Yourself (Enough)" is a strong first single for Danielle's first project to be released later this year. Listen at https://soundcloud.com/redefined-1/dont-torture-yourself-enough-1/s-mrDuf

	3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I wish I could choose just one. I love that the combination of songwriting and performance is a powerful way to build relationships with people; sharing real stories, moments in time, and emotional experiences that create a musical landmark in our hearts.

	5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you:

My favorite song that I've written is called "Enough (Don't Torture Yourself)". It is special to me because it is the moment that I decided I wanted more for myself. I got clear on my purpose with creating music and decided I would carry it out no matter what it takes. My intention is for "Enough" to have a life of its own; empowering others to think differently, reflect and then choose to pursue what makes them most happy.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

In the next five years, I plan to link up with an excellent manager and team to release and tour with my first solo project internationally, especially in the U.S., Asia, Africa and the UK. I love collaborating, so I plan to continue working with talented songwriters and musicians to write for other artists, and for my next album. Â

I absolutely want to live overseas for a some time as a full time performing artist, building creative partnerships with charitable wellness and other organizations. If work-life balance exists in music, I'd like to achieve that goal too so I can enjoy this journey with friends and family. Overall, I realized that I can point the compass, but it's even more exciting to see what other opportunities popup that steer these goals to new heights.

I am currently recording my first project for release this year. I'm never short of creative marketing concepts to interact with my listeners, so you can expect some fun events upon release. Also, when I write, I visualize epic movie scenes. I would love the opportunity to have many of the songs placed in Film and TV.

	8. Where can we buy your music?

You can purchase music on my website www.daniellewcarter.com where I am pre-selling the first project.   Pre-sales will support the completion of the album and help to fund the tour.

I am learning and discovering where the music industry is headed every day. Overall, we have trended toward a high tech and high touch society. We've seen a wealth of creativity through the web--such as virtual concerts and youtube artist sensations--which present more alternatives to major label deals. Major labels appear to be acting more like venture capitalist buying out small established business (i.e. independent artists with proven track records and substantial followings). Â

As media continues to broaden the access to local music on a global scale, the craving for authenticity and raw talent grows stronger. Even the plugins that are being used are getting more competitive, shifting toward a mix that sounds as close to live instrumentation as possible. Because things have become so high tech, artists like Adele, and singer/songwriters are gaining more attention. Â

In an effort to move with the shift of creative online solutions in the industry, I started a youtube channel DanielleWCarter with a video blog called "From the Ground Up: Life of An Independent Artist." Like anyone starting from scratch in this economy, I share my journey of having to be creative and resourceful. I seek out mentors, instructional tools and opportunities needed to design my own artist development plan. As an artist having to learn and sharpen as many skills as possible, I believe the stamina, will and entrepreneurial knowledge cultivated now will not only unlock doors, but also keep them open longer as the music industry takes new shapes.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!

I discovered Songsalive! when I first transitioned into the industry. I am grateful to have developed relationships and knowledge about the industry through the wealth of resources Songsalive! offers. It is nice to be among a community of dedicated people who are committed to presenting opportunities and building relationships around the world. Songsalive! is a great example that it only takes one person to begin an international family. Thank you to Gilli Moon and the Songsalive! family!

Katie Garibaldi's latest single, "Baby We're Really in Love," was written by the late, great Hank Williams. 3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I enjoy both songwriting and performing, and I can't really compare the two because they are different experiences for me. Songwriting is a very personal, emotional, and cathartic experience for me. Performing is a fun and adrenaline-high experience that's all about connecting with other people and sharing my music with them. I love both for different reasons.

	4. Who are your musical influences?

Beatles, Huey Lewis, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, Jonny Lang, Patty Griffin, and many other country songwriters (and more!)

	5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you:

I don't have any one favorite song that I've written because every song is like a snapshot of my life and what I was feeling at that time, so each one tells a different story. Although, I wrote a particularly special song called "Wedding Day Song" and performed it for my husband at our wedding this past summer, so that one will always be close to my heart.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

My main goal is just to keep working hard and keep doing what I’m doing. When I put time, hard work, and passion into my career, each year that has gone by has offered more and more opportunities to me as an artist. In the years coming I’ll be working on new music, new recordings, new concerts, and more touring. I have toured a lot on the West Coast and in Nashville, but in the next year/two years I will expand into more East Coast touring as well.

In my career so far I have recorded six full-length albums, a few EPs, and released some singles as well. Next in store is recording my next album, set for a 2013 release!

As far as in my community, there are still good places to play and the people who come out to shows in San Francisco and the Bay Area are amazing supporters of live music. So I take pride in the fact that I’m working to make my dream a reality as an indie artist without the complications of a major label, and pride in the fans out here who support indie music and live music venues. I would say Nashville takes the cake for live music supporters as people are always going out to see shows there, and they genuinely listen to the artists and appreciate their performances. At the same time, in general on a global level, I think a lot of people still have the mindset of enjoying live music without the need to pay for it, or the venues thinking it's normal to book artists without paying them. If more people go to shows and support the artists and the venues, I think this mindset will shift and the community will value and compensate music artists more fairly for their work.

	CD Review "Expedition"

Philip Feinstein is a multi-instrumentalist based in Australia. His album “Expedition” is a plethora of musical soundscapes that explore different sonic textures and sounds, worthy of film and television and radio. Picked from over 500 submissions, Philip’s title track “Expedition” is featured on the Songsalive! CD Sampler 12 and is an exquisite eclectic instrumental that showcases Feinstein’s composition and production skills. This piece has a certain medieval charm to it, as if we are in an English period film of time gone by, and also has moments of world music instrumentation. Feinstein is clever in his arrangements, and sensitive in his style. It’s a breath of fresh air to listen to instrumental compositions that are not too heavy, yet still emotional. The album has a staggering 17 tracks, and not all instrumental. Track 5, “Fantasy” features a female vocal and melody that could stand well in a musical theater production. As Philip promotes on his CD Baby page, this album is “a musical experience of life's journeys that is both inspiring and uplifting” and he truly has captured these feelings. Thoroughly entertaining, whimsical, and thought provoking, Philip Feinstein is your Rick Wakeman of today! Get your copy of the album on CD Baby http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/philipfeinstein and check out the Songsalive! CD Sampler 12 at http://www.songsalive.org/cdsamplers.htm

1: Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Sydney, Australia?

I was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. After lots of travel around the world, and not wanting to return to the apartheid regime of South Africa, I finally ended up in Sydney, Australia. And by that time, I had experienced music from lots of exciting places. Third world and South American music would have to top my list.

	2. What style of music would you say you do?

Although many people describe my style of music as New World, meditation music, or just easy listening, I would say it relates best to movies and television. Mind you, I know of at least one doctor's operating room that has it playing . . .

3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I would say that I enjoy songwriting most, as very often there are no rules. It's great to be able to let your mood dictate the atmosphere and then create the music.

4. Who are your musical influences?

I feel that my musical influences come from the indigenous people of many countries. I remember, as a nine year old, I used to hide in the bushes in Johannesburg, watching the locals singing during their Sunday church services. In Fiji, I would sit around the campfire in awe of the beautiful sounds. But from a western perspective, I would say Mike Oldfield, Rick Wakeman and Keith Jarrett also had an influence.

5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you:

My current favorite song is "Are you going my way?" Firstly I was able to feature a young Sydney lady who has a fabulous voice and had never recorded before. Secondly the song has different sections, so it flirts strongly with my theme of travel. And finally, the rhythms and timings change around, which is one thing I love doing with my music.

6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

One of my current ventures is volunteer music teaching at refugee detention centers. Being a strong believer in self esteem, and feeling strongly for refugees anywhere, I am also currently trying to fill all Australian detention centers with music instruments and volunteer teachers. On a professional level, I would like to keep composing for film and television. I really enjoy the challenge.

	7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next for you:

Many years ago I was composing with a great singer by the name of Barrington Davis. We never did many quality recordings, but I know that the songs are good. So, I would like to record many of them again. I also want to record some of the beautiful voices at Sydney's detention center.

I believe the music industry is at exciting crossroads. We have all seen many new genres entering the field. We have also experienced the videos that go with the music. I think the next big step is where the public will be able to change the music and videos as they experience it. It will be more integrated as viewers take more control. Locally it is exciting to see more and more music venues opening up. Gone are the days of complaining neighbours . . .

I really believe that Songsalive is a very important avenue for new and established musicians to get out there. In fact, I would go so far as to say that Songsalive performs a great community service. Well done!

We are pleased to announce Kevin Mongelli as our Pro Member Spotlight for August - September 2012:

	CD REVIEW

I am deeply moved by an artist who is courageous and eloquent to create a full album of piano instrumentals. Kevin Mongelli's album, Fort Lonesome, captured my attention the first moment,... the first note. I love the piano, being a pianist myself. The first song that was provided to us, "Darker Days", really captures the essence of the title: it's moody, evocative, emotional and deep. I almost cried as the keys crescendoed about half way through, taking me down into my darkest and inner most secret cave of longings and dreams. Wow, what a pianist, and what a composer. We need more Kevin Mongelli's in the world to usher such emotion and take us on a journey in music. Thank you for delivering this to us. Albeit a dark and lonely place, they say you need to feel the blues to play the blues.Â

	Â

A sense of his classical roots, "Fort Lonesome" is Kevin's 3rd album and shows his strength as a composer, pianist and emotive performer. "Passion for Springtime", while still emitting the deep emotion as the last, has a certain hope infused in Kevin's playing. "Ride The Wind" uses the full spectrum of the keys, and it really feels like the wind is taking me off, as the fingers move and chords progress.

"Train to Despair" while yet another melancholy title, really captures the movement of the train and I didn't feel so "desperate" when hearing it. If anything, Kevin's compositions uplift and inspire me, though I feel that perhaps he has been to those dark places to be able to emit the emotion so well in his music.

Kevin is very clever with his song titles. They really depict the sound he is creating on the ivories. He's also mastered the independent artist promotional strategies, of which I'm always trying to get our Songsalive! members to be masters of: he has his website, itunes/amazon/e-stores, Songsalive!, musicXray and other social network profiles up to speed. Check out his website at www.PianoEloquence.com and Songsalive! Profile at http://www.songsalive.org/profile/Kevin-Mongelli. File as Classical, instrumental. Make no bones about this: he is up there with the sounds of Czerny and Beethoven, but for our modern day audiences who love piano, this album will truly capture your heart.

	Â

	INTERVIEW

1: Where are you from, originally and what brought you to Tampa Bay, Florida?
I've lived several places in my life. Â Grew up mostly around the Cheseapeake Bay in Maryland. Â Also lived in St. Croix for a few years. Â Now reside in beautiful Tampa Bay, Florida!
Â

	2. What style of music would you say you do?
Solo Piano - Original, Visual, Classical
Â

	3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?
I prefer composing. Â I am sometimes surprised to find levels of emotion inside of me that I wasn't aware existed.
Â

	4. Who are your musical influences?
Elgar wrote emotive orchestral pieces with strong central themes, which is similar to my style of composing. Â I am also strongly influenced by Stravinsky, Mahler, and Debussy.
Â

	5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you?
My favorite composition is Darker Days. Â Much of the music from my new Fort Lonesome album originated from different parts of my life. Â I actually composed Darker Days last year, which became of opening piece as the perfect lead in for the album story.
Â

	6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?
We have been very pleased over the response from fans and critics alike on the new release of Fort Lonesome. Â Will be promoting it heavily over the next year and then intend to begin work on my next project. Â In addition to reaching as many fans as possible, also have been actively placing my music in front of industry professionals for placement in film and tv.

7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next for you?
In 2009, I released my first album "Ascension" with eight original compositions and was touched by the positive response. Â I then researched and arranged unique holiday themes, which ultimately became the "Christmas Variations" album in 2010. Â In 2012, we released "Fort Lonesome" with ten new compositions. I am so pleased at the response and reviews. Â It was nominated for Album of the Year at the Indie Music Channel Awards.

8. Where can we buy your music?
My music is available from all of the major online retailers.  CD's are on Amazon.  Tracks can be purchased from my website, iTunes, CD Baby, Rhapsody, and more.  A good starting point for direct links is from my website at www.PianoEloquence.com.
Â

	9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?
Â I have been so pleased at the progression of opportunities available for independent musicians. Â That sector is clearly growing which has allowed my music to be heard around the globe.

10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!
I am proud to be a new member of the great community!

	- a way for songwriters and the music industry to connect directly with no
middleman -
- a unique promotion of independent songwriters seeking placement of their
songs, rather than 'artists' seeking fame.

So, 6 months on since we upgraded our website, where are we now? Songsalive!® is the leading international non-profit organization (public benefit charity) - run by volunteer songwriters, dedicated to nurturing, support, education and promotion of songwriters and composers worldwide. Through our grassroots international efforts, we’ve put a stamp on what “global community” truly is and it’s the type of community that is definitely needed in this ever changing music business where songwriting can be a very isolating experience and career. Back in 1997 when we started, there were very few artists on the Internet, let alone music organizations. There were very few websites, period. Songsalive! was one of the first truly global communities, bringing songwriters and composers together from all around the world. We were one of the first to provide educational services and support for songwriters and composers on a global level, and we've stuck with you through unbelievable changes in the music business and economic times at large. WE ARE STILL HERE.

	Â

Our website, since '97, was an informational portal to access resources about songwriting and the music industry. In 2007 we became an 'adolescent' so to speak, and were able to offer a membership portal where members could log in and access the Backstage (exclusive member educational content). What was always missing was a true, robust online community for our members, to engage, network, collaborate and learn online, no matter where you live in the world. With the advent of social networks, such as MySpace, Facebook and Twitter, and the population's desire to engage online in an easy, social manner, our mission has been to bring our website and online experience to the level of such, and at the same time still offer exclusive backstage educational content and personal support.

	Â

In September 2011 through the sweat and dedication of our volunteer team, we upgraded our site, we created this 'brave new world'. It's like Facebook, but even better. It's just for SONGWRITERS! This is unique. Not only can you now engage with each other on our website (add friends, update status, music, and pics), but you can learn through our website: attend an online song critique workshop, chat with other songwriters from different nations, and download songwriting learning content from our backstage portal. We have done it. The first of its kind. And we are proud to create this new online learning and support experience for songwriters. Now, in 2011, we've come of age, and we've found a way to provide it all to you through our new online community website. Our mission: to become the largest social network for songwriters and composers worldwide, and continue to be the largest songwriters' membership organization worldwide*, delivering online social interaction, backstage exclusive content, and personal attention & support, in an easy, fun, way to engage, network and share. Welcome to Songsalive! 2.0. Watch our video on how you can maximize your career through Songsalive! and our website: www.songsalive.org/memberbenefits.htm

Just a quick note to announce the release of my latest solo album, Life Outside the Tent, on Snipe Bog Records. Â

This is my 14th solo album, believe it or not, and continues in my long-standing tradition of being stylistcaly all over the map. The thread that links it all together is me, I suppose.  Â

The new album features genre-bending rockers, a goth-pop orchestration, political ska, a post-punk angular gut-punch, an Irish pub rock worker’s anthem, West African sunset music, chilling social commentary and moments of heartbreaking confessional poignancy.

	CD Review

“Speechless” is the new album by experimental songwriter, Mary Lemanski, with an obvious expression of non-expression: that’s right, this album is purely instrumental, and no vocals, which is a different direction to Mary’s usual vocal driven songs, and the art work on the cover embodies the message: a zipper over her mouth. Love it!

What a breath of fresh air to open the CD with a meditative, serene instrumental. I was instantly relaxed and taken on a global journey with the exotic sounds. Asian melodic soundscapes, trance-like ethereal pads, and my favorite, a flavor of Australian didgeridoo-like sounds: “Morning Sun” is definitely a high class and effective new age meditation track that could be played on any radio that embraces spiritual awakening.Â

Though this is where the new age, trance-like compositions end. The Cd is quite eclectic in sound. By track 2, “Emerald Isle”, I definitely hear Lemanski’s embracing of Asian sounds and culture. This song is reminiscent of a traditional Chinese street fair sound, filled with timpanis, marching drums and whistles. Not too long, it gives you a taste of all the elements.

My focus led me to track 4, “Looking Back”, which on the cover is listed as “composed at age 12”. I like to see an artist bring glimpses of their childhood. Let it be said that your best song is not always the one you wrote recently. This piece shows Mary’s childhood talent: naïvety (in a good way), and the almost melancholy “ingénue” is depicted. It’s pretty, and showcases her piano playing.

Track 5, “City Lights” has a taste of the boogie and blues of Chicago where she lives now. The keyboard playing (especially the jammin’ right hand) is super, and shows off Mary’s chops. The only aspect I would have preferred is live instrumentation for this piece, as “boogie woogie” really works best hearing live musicians jam together. Still, Lemanski’s composition and arrangement skills are excellent, building the musical elements in one at a time, and I can see her effectively arranging a live jazz band if and when that time comes.

Speaking of arrangements, the string arrangement in “Theme & Variations” is luminous and beautiful.  Track 7, “Hippie Hop” is my favorite of the bunch, simply due to my personal favorites in moody contemporary electronic, ala Massiv Attack or post ‘90s Radiohead.

By this stage on the disc, I have concluded that Mary Lemanski’s album “Speechless” is an excellent ‘calling card’ for her to position herself as a film score or orchestral music arranger, showcasing her abilities to compose and arrange an array of eclectic pieces of music in many different genres, styles and instrumentation. If she doesn’t find a foot with the album on radio, then I certainly feel the plethora of diverse sounds will establish her songwriting credibility.

“Speechless” is a plethora of instrumental, experimental, sounds, global ethnicity and times, showcasing a talented and versatile composer who is willing to stretch the boundaries of modern CD disc making to more than just the average 10 pop songs. Mary can do that to, but it’s wonderful to see her give us more, and fearlessly at that. I would definitely encourage you all to purchase a copy

	INTERVIEW

	1.    Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city, Chicago?

I’m originally from Springfield, IL. I lived there for 18 years before going to college at Millikin University in Decatur, IL. After college, I moved out to Tempe, AZ, where I studied audio engineering and received my MBA in e-Business. I ended up living there for 10 years working in radio, stage production, and re-mixing…minus 3 months when I went to intern at a record label and a music licensing company in Los Angeles. After the birth of our son, my husband and I decided to move back to the Chicago area to be a lot closer to both of our families.

	Â

	2.    What style of music would you say you do?

I write all different styles of music…from classical to jazz to rock to pop to hip-hop. The style of my latest release, "Speechless," is a mix of Classical and World music.

	Â

	3.    What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?

I enjoy performing, but I think that I enjoy songwriting more. I enjoy the creative process and building something entirely new that did not exist before. In performing, you get to share your creation with the world, but there is something divine about breathing life into a new song for the first time.

	Â

	4.    Who are your musical influences?

I have so many! I think I'm most influenced by Tori Amos, Ben Folds, Thelonious Monk, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, The Beastie Boys, Screeching Weasel, and The Ramones. Classically, Chopin, Beethoven, Danny Elfman, and John Williams inspire me. I also love artists that bend genres like They Might Be Giants and Beck. Â

	Â

	5.    Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you.

My favorite song on "Speechless" is "Bye Bye Choo Choo." My 5-year old son and I wrote it together. When he was younger, he used to run around the house singing, "Bye bye choo choo" to the tune of the main theme of the piece. I used it as the basis for the entire piece. It's interesting to see and hear the musical creative process of a young child, plus it's a great bonding experience to create music with my family.

	Â

	6.    What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?

I’m starting to work on another album of pop/rock/alternative music. I'd eventually like to record an album of jazz songs, an album of children songs, an album of comedy songs, an album of pop/electro-dance/hip-hop material and another instrumental album. I'd also like to compose a collection of classical-oriented solo piano music. I want to continue to grow as a musician and songwriter/composer.

	Â

	7.    Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next.

I've released several EPs since 1999. In 2010, I released my first full-length CD, "Eclectic," and earlier this year, I released my instrumental album, "Speechless." I'm just starting to write new material for an album I hope to release in 2013. I'm being torn musically right now between writing pop punk/rock and piano rock...maybe I'll just do two albums or a double album.

	Â

	8.    Where can we buy your music?

You can buy my CDs, "Speechless" and “Eclectic,” and other merchandise at http://marylemanski.com/store/. You can also buy my albums at CDBaby.com, iTunes, Amazon.com, and more.

	Â

	9.    What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?

Chicago has an amazing music scene. I just read a study a few weeks ago, entitled "The Geographic Flow of Music," which said that Chicago is #2, behind Atlanta, for setting trends in music. There is virtually any style of music you can find being created here. I love it! I think the music industry in Chicago has nowhere to go but up!

As far as music on a global level, I think that the major labels are a dying breed, and that independent music will reign in the end. I’ve been saying that for 13+ years, and every year, it becomes truer. When I first started writing music, there were six major labels. At the start of last year, there were four. Now if EMI and Universal get their way, there will be three. They just keep eating each other up. There is nothing innovative or unique musically coming from the major labels right now anyway. All of the artists sound the same, particularly pop and hip-hop artists. They all are over-produced with robot voices...who really wants to listen to that!? Where's the emotion? Where's the music in that garbage? The independent labels and DIY artists will continue to thrive because that is where the innovation lies. Indie artists are allowed to try new things, and they can get their music into the hands of their fans efficiently and effectively because the Machine does not bog them down.

	Â

	10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!

Songsalive! is a fantastic organization for songwriters. Lots of great opportunities and ways to learn the craft and business! Gilli Moon really puts her heart, soul, and mind into what she does, and she truly cares for the songwriters she is helping. I’m proud to be both the Chicago coordinator and the Director of Operations for such a great organization! If you live in the Chicago area or are just passing through, check out the website at www.songsalive.org/group/chicago for more information on our events. Also feel free to contact me any time with questions or suggestions at mary@songsalive.org.

Takao has found a way to fit right in in Hollywood, but he also has sponsors from his home country like Rizumu Clothing, where he wore their pieces in his music video, “Give Me Tonight”, and Lubra Car Designs where is featured in one of their car commercials. Have you ever thought about gaining sponsorship for your band? Maybe you should. It is a brilliant way to gain funding and touch mass audiences.

The Power of Simplicity in Songwriting

	By Kim Copeland

	Feb 2012

	Â

Most up and coming songwriters have been told at least once to “be original”. Try to say something that hasn’t been said before or to say it in a new way. Easier said than done, right?

	…Maybe so.Â

Too often we strangle our creativity by trying to be too profound, too clever, too original. Listen to the radio. Most radio hits contain elements of familiarity combined with a new twist. They aren’t reinventing the wheel. They just give us enough new to make the old sound fresh.Â

Listeners want to feel engaged and comfortable while listening to songs. They don’t want to think as much as feel. Music is more emotional than intellectual. Complex lyrics and musical structures have their place, but in commercial songwriting, they are rarely the songs that “break” songwriting careers. Those songs are written for the writer, not the audience. If you hope to find commercial success as a songwriter, you owe it to yourself to try to understand what listeners respond to. Why they are drawn to some songs over others. What makes them willing to pay for some songs so they can listen to them over and over again?

Simplicity is a powerful tool in songwriting. If you can wrap a deep message within a catchy, repetitive melody, you’ve got a hit. If you can create a groove that makes the listener immediately feel comfortable wanting to move to it, you’ve got a hit. By combining simple elements that any listener can get involved with easily and quickly, and original elements (whatever you do differently than anyone else), you create a fresh, new product that can attract a mass audience.Â

When you play to your strengths by doing what comes naturally to you, you make writing songs easier and you write better songs. Keep it simple by identifying elements that work for you and combining them in a way that works for audiences. Â

Study what people respond to about your songs. Once you have identified it, let that be the unique factor that you showcase in all of your writing. It could be your language; the way you express yourself or your ideas. It might be your musical gift; the chord voicings you use or the particular texture and tone of your instrument, be it guitar or voice. Perhaps you feel grooves and phrasing that is different and hooks people into your songs. Â

Study hit songs from several genres, and try to determine what about the song is infectious to listeners. Is it the groove, the hooky message, the musical riff, the sing along melody?  Next, choose one element from each of two or three different hit songs, and combine them with one of your lyrical ideas. Maybe a repetitive chord structure from one song combined with the groove of another. Now add your original lyric to it and see if it gives you a presentation for your song that now contains some proven elements with some fresh new ones. Almost every hit song has something that is familiar hidden within it, either by design or accident.

I am certainly NOT encouraging you to plagiarize anyone’s work; but studying it, learning from it and using that knowledge to help you break through the wall of commercial songwriting is encouraged. We are all conglomerates of what we have seen, heard, felt, and absorbed. By using your experiences, talents and personal musical tastes you will create an original voice for yourself as a songwriter. Hopefully, one that will help you stand out as original while attracting a mass audience.

When you hear “be original” and “this is a little TOO different – I don’t know what to do with it” in the same conversation, perhaps you are trying too hard. Try being original within the structure of familiarity and see if not only makes your songwriting life easier, but also elevates your standing in the commercial market.

CD REVIEW: 12 Track Mind, the new album by Songsalive! Pro Member Norm Strauss, is a rootsy, organic and mesmerizing body of work. This Canadian artist is someone to be watching, and I’ll tell you why…

The featured song that was brought to our attention first, “Play God”, is a masterful musical production that captivated me within the first 20 seconds with its music and magical voice. The guitar playing, the male vocal, the lyrics, the mysterious flute, all entranced me. I was mesmerized. Strauss is one talented artist! This song is so well produced and the story entrancing. But most of all, I fell in love with his voice. “Looks like the devil trying to play god”… the main hook line, tells of an eerie tale lyrically and through the music, using touches of middle-eastern nuances and implying trouble in the middle east, all that we know too well. I think he told the story eloquently, and gives us more emotion than hard core facts, letting our imagine run with our own interpretation of the issues. Well done.

The first track “Easily Satisfied” out does any Lady Antebellum song, with a touching duet which includes a female vocal (Kim McMechan?). It has a twinge of country, but with universal appeal.

But Norm doesn’t fit in one box. Straight after, “In Stereo” hops into your ears with this Paul Simon circus instrumentation mixed with a Tim McGraw vocal that makes me fall in love with his voice all over again.

What’s fitting to say is that Norm, while a master at beautiful recording quality, has a lot to say. He talks of love, losing friends, and personal strength. It’s touching and unusually sensitive, where so many male dominated records don’t capture the delicate and sensitive subjects that Dave does well.

This is more than just an independent record. This is a record that deserves mainstream attention, by an artist that has a fall-in-love with voice, and masterful musicianship and songwriting. I look forward to watching Norm Strauss’ musical evolution.

	INTERVIEW:

Question 1: Where are you from, originally and what brought you to your current city (please write the city here: ?:

I am originally from northern British Columbia. I grew up in mostly remote towns like Williams Lake and Vanderhoof. When I was 19 I took a job as a lumberjack working in the logging camps of central and northern BC. That's where I learned to play guitar and write songs. I had nothing to do in the evenings and we were 100 miles from the nearest town so I bought a guitar and started learning James Taylor and Paul Simon songs. Eventually I decided that this was no place for a musician to ply his trade so I headed south. I got as far Kelowna, British Columbia and have been here more or less for almost 30 years now. I don't think I even know how to run a chainsaw anymore. I have also lived for awhile in Boston, Vancouver and near Frankfurt in Germany.

Question 2. What style of music would you say you do?:Â

That's always a hard question to answer but i would say that these days the closest I can come to describing what I do is Americana. It's a close cousin to country music but usually with more attitude and it comes without the 'Nashville' parameters of songwriting. My CD's that I recorded throughout the 90's was more rock and roll.

Question 3. What do you enjoy best - songwriting or performing and why?:
When the song is coming easily its fun, but more often its a bit more of a grind than that. I still enjoy it though. It's thrilling when you know you have a good one on the line. Performing for me though will always feed the songwriting. If I ever were to stop performing I am sure my writing would stop pretty quickly. So I guess I am saying I enjoy performing more. My preference is small, intimate concerts like house concerts and small 'listening rooms'. I thoroughly enjoy telling stories and making a strong connection to an audience. You start the evening off as strangers but soon you feel like old friends as the evening progresses. I love that feeling. I never will get tired of it. I also love that I can push myself to a new boundary of playing and singing while performing. After a 20 date tour I am usually a better singer and player then when I started.. if only just a little bit.

Question 4. Who are your musical influences?:
Okay, another hard question to answer but here goes; James Taylor, Paul Simon, Mark Heard, Bruce Cockburn, Stevie Ray Vaughn (sometimes), Blue Rodeo, Queen (I know that's a weird name on this list) Beach Boys, Steve Miller and maybe just a touch of the Beatles.

Question 5. Describe your favorite song you have written and why is it so special to you:

I wrote a song with Andrew Smith called 'Kerry Anne'. It was written soon after I had two friends of mine in two different cities get ill and die around the same time. I remember going to visit each of them shortly before they passed away and I felt incredibly awkward and scared while they both were so brave and eloquent. I was shaken by my inability to process it all at the time. I started writing Kerry Anne as a way to try and figure out how I felt about this huge loss and to try to come to grips with it all. I wanted a way to remind myself of both of them long after. Singing that song does just that.

Question 6. What are your goals for the next 5 years musically speaking?:

They are  perhaps a bit vague but real nonetheless. I want to get better at what I do. I want to record at least two more albums during that time. (I currently have 14). I want to stay healthy and strong.

Question 7. Tell us about your recordings and what's in store next for you:

Â I started recording songs soon after when I moved down to Kelowna to explore the 'big city'. I was amazed when people would actually sit through the songs. Eventually I recorded my first project (for the tidy sum of $150.00 on Malcolm Petch's home stereo system). Malcolm had figured out how to bounce tracks between two cassettes and thereby create multi-tracking. I sold 500 copies that summer and was introduced into the world of making music to pay rent. I have been doing more or less the same thing since then.

I have been doing this a long time and have seen a lot of changes in the studio. These days I record mostly digital and then run it through an analog to get the warmth. My earlier recordings were also really band based. These days the arrangements are more centered around the acoustic guitar and to me are more holistic sounding. It sounds weird but here I am, still trying to find my 'sound'. The latest CD sounds to me the most honest and organically grown CD I have ever done.

	What's next?

I am starting to do a lot of touring in Europe and I am trying to build a bigger network there and I am also involved in an artistic project called Tribehouse. www.tribehouse.org. This is an artist collective based here and also in Dresden Germany that is trying to encourage and promote conversations about faith, justice and art. That is, how do you as an artist intersect your faith (whatever it is)with your art and does that ever intersect with helping those less fortunate? Check out the site when you get a chance.

Question 8. Where can we buy your music?:
At my concerts or on my website www.normstrauss.com or you can find me on itunes.

Question 9. What are your views about where the music industry is heading in your community, or on a global level?:

Less competition, more collaboration. Less corporation, more indie. The 'small time' musician is rapidly becoming more powerful and the labels are struggling to adapt. Better music is being made because the Internet has afforded more artists to bypass the traditional gatekeepers and get their music into the hearts of an audience that wants to hear it. People are finally getting tired of the plastic and want to hear the real thing again. The singer/songwriter is making a comeback.

Question 10. Anything pertinent you'd like to say about Songsalive!:Â
I am brand new to Songsalive but I am looking forward to getting to know some of the other songwriters. One thing I love is hanging out with other writers. I think it’s a cool idea to have a place that facilitates this online.
