Q: Can I submit my song just by emailing you my songs?
A: No, we can't just accept emails like this for submissions. You must apply through Sonicbids online.
Q: Can I submit a song without going through Sonicbids
A: Unfortunately, no. In the past we used to also have a direct submission facility, however it took us too long to go through them, and many songwriters sent us incomplete information. We've found that Sonicbids is the perfect vehicle for artists to consolidate their promotional information in one EPK with a bio, music, photos, even video, and then be able to submit to not only our opportunity but many from around the world. By applying through them, you also get the Sonicbids opportunities also. If you don't like them, then stop after a month after you've submitted to the Songsalive! CD sampler. But we believe it's a very useful tool for all artists and songwriters.
Q: Why is there a submission fee?
A: As Songsalive! is a non-profit organization run by volunteers, we need to recruit help to listen to the songs, choose songs, and compile them. All of this takes time and energy. Also because we use Sonicbids for our submission process, they ask that there is a submission fee, in order to list it. By the way, imagine if it was free to submit your song? EVERY ONE would submit songs and there would be a lot of less than desirable songs too, to wade through (everyone with Garageband and a computer can make a song these days!) So we have to set a standard. The submission fee through Sonicbids is $20. Songsalive! gets half of it and Sonicbids takes half of it.
Q: Why is there a production fee if the song i chosen and do I have to pay it?
A: Yes. It's important that you know this. We are a non-profit organisation run by volunteers. Our share of the submission fees via Sonicbids do not nearly cover the costs of production of CDs and the promotion we are about to do. Therefore we charge a production fee to the artists to help us create this project. The fees are $180 for Pro members and $250 for non Pro members. There will be no other costs involved. Consider this like advertising on your end, where you are getting your song in different markets that you may not do on your own.
You only need to pay the production fee if you are chosen. You don't pay it in the application process. When you pay the fee your song will be on the CD Sampler. If you choose not to then another artist and song will be selected.
Q: Do I get Songsalive! Pro Membership if I pay the full production fee?
A: Unfortunately due to our membership system, we cannot give memberships this year. It is best that you join as a Pro Member first on our site, then apply for the Sampler at the discount.
Q: What is the agreement I will be agreeing to?
A: You agree to the agreement as you go through the Sonicbids submission process. It is listed during the application online. Please ensure you read it FULLY before you submit your song.
Q: Do you sell the CD or do digital distribution?
A: No, The Sampler is promotional only and is not sold in stores nor for downloads. It is distributed to our music industry and media lists (see Distribution here). We do post the entire Sampler online for listening only on the Songsalive! web pageas streaming only - all downloads are disabled.
Q: Where will the CD Sampler be distributed?
A: See Distribution here to see where the CD goes to. (scroll down to DISTRIBUTION). Note that this is a promotional CD and we put it in the hands of music industry representatives, the media, and anyone looking for a GREAT song.
Q: When you say "mastered" what do you mean?
A: We mean that your song needs to be radio quality and has been mastered by a real mastering engineer. The artist has to provide a mastered song. We then take all the mastered songs to our mastering engineer in Nashville (Independent Mastering), and he tops and tails and Eqs the entire compilation project ready for CD player listening.
Q: How long have you been doing CD Samplers?
A: For 14 years, since we started Songsalive! in 1997. You can listen to all of them from the CD Sampler home page, under each CD cover image.
Q: Any cool success stories?
A: Yes! Songs have been placed in film and tv shows, with artists, received radio play and publishing deals. We can't always track every success story because the CD Sampler is widely distributed and not all the songwriters and the music industry tell us when something cool happens. But it happens!
